Time to brush our teeth!

Brushing their teeth is an extremely important procedure as our children’s oral hygiene depends on it.

It’s a procedure that our children should learn how to do in the right way and also incorporate it in their daily routines.

In many cases though, children deny to brush their teeth and the following tips will help you.

  • Start early. Since the appearance of the first teeth, start brushing using a very soft toothbrush. This will help your child realise that brushing our teeth is something we should do every day. In the very early ages we don’t use toothpaste.
  • Make it fun. Out there, at the market, you can find toothbrushes of all shapes and colors, as well as toothpastes with fun and pleasant flavors, which can make the whole thing a fun experience for a child. Just make sure that the products you will use are the right ones for your child’s age.
  • Brush often. Even though most of us brush our teeth more than once during the day, when it comes to our children, we mostly focus on brushing their teeth before going to bed, or when they wake up in the morning. It’s important to teach them to brush their teeth during the day also and especially right after each meal.
  • Time. In order to be effective, brushing their teeth should last at least a few minutes. Use a timer, an hourglass or sing one of your favorite songs, to make sure that brushing will last at least 2 minutes.
  • Make sure it’s done correctly. Whether you are helping the child to brush his teeth or he insists on doing it alone, make sure that it is done in the right way, that all the teeth have been well brushed and that they are indeed clean.
  • Training. There’s obviously a certain procedure that has to be followed during brushing their teeth. Explain this procedure to the child and teach them the right way of brushing each group of teeth.
  • Toothpaste. Use a small amound of toothpaste when the child is able to get it out of his mouth and not swallow it. Many times children refuse to brush their teeth because they cannot use the toothpaste appropriately. In this case, you can talk to your pediatrician or your child’s dentist for guidance. Brushing your child’s teeth though should not be skipped, even if it is only done with water.
